This Website is devoted to the 47th
Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
My motivation for this site is as follows:
To
generate an interest in and promote a study of the Regiment, and
the Civil War, in general.To
provide a forum for the presentation of new data and research
concerning the unit.To
solicit comments concerning my research as well as
solicitation of any original material that may still be in
private hands.
I began this site because my Great Grandfather, George W. Gore and his half brother Jonathan Gore were in the unit during the American Civil War
As the site evolved over the years I have started creating Biographies of Unit Volunteers from the information provided by those who contact me saying they have a descendant relative discovered through family history. I several instances I have also created
several biographies from information provided by concerned citizens.

My Great-grandfather George W. Gore enlisted as a private in 47th Regt. on 10 Feb 1865 and was assigned to Company "A." He enlisted at Dale County, WI. with his enlistment credited to the town of Roxbury, WI and he received a $100.00 bounty for enlistment from that town.
George's two brothers also served in the Civil War as did his half-brother Jonathan Gore, who enlisted the day following George's enlistment, also in Company "A" of the 47th Regt. Their brother Jacob Gore enlisted at Medina, WI on 15 Aug 1862 in Co. "I" of the 32nd Regt. Wis.
Vol., he was wounded in action on 03 Feb 1865 at Rivers Bridge, SC., and mustered out of service on 12 Jun 1865. Their brother John L. Gore was drafted in Winchester, WI, on 24 Nov 1863 into Co. "F" 1st Regiment Cavalry Wisconsin Volunteers. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal and was M. O. on 19 Jul
1865. All this is from the Wisconsin Historical Society records. Four (4) brothers all serving Wisconsin in the Civil War!
When George was
mustered out of service at Nashville on 4 Sep 1865 it was noted
in his records that he retained, under G.O. #26101, his rifled
musket with accoutrements valued at $6.00.
